Our Mission
We walk alongside survivors of torture through trauma-informed care that addresses both visible and invisible wounds. We provide integrated case support, mental health services, medical navigation, and community connection to help survivors rebuild trust, restore dignity, and thrive as part of our shared community.
Our History
THRIVE Center for Survivors of Torture (formerly named Utah Health and Human Rights or UHHR) was founded in 2003 by Cynthia Willard, MD, MPH, in response to a limited understanding among medical service providers about the needs of torture survivors in Utah — specifically, how to recognize, assess, and care for survivors of torture within refugee, immigrant, and asylum-seeker communities. At that time, UHHR’s Medical Director, Mara Rabin, M.D., helped Dr. Willard keep UHHR open and running when Dr. Willard moved to California in 2004. Renamed THRIVE Center for Survivors of Torture in 2023, the organization's services have significantly grown since that time.
THRIVE is a member of the National Consortium of Torture Treatment Programs.
